sounds like someone needs to take a history lesson.
the southern cross is a huge part of american history.
not everyone who raises it is a racist, they are just proud of their history.

I got the flag on my car cause, I like southern metal And PANTERA. No racism. I guess it just depends on how some people see the flag

I am not an expert in the matter, but i have studdied this part of history for aproximately 35 years, and i am neither a racist or a biggot. I must commend you all for such a spiritted discussion and alot of very valid points have been brought forth, I would like to make note that aprox 70000 canadians fought in that war, roughly 26000 fought for the south. perhaps you ask yourself WHY? well, if you try and rationalize what happened 150 plus years ago with modern thinking you will most likely say well thats the DUMBEST, MOST IDIOTIC thing i have heard……
some, went for the EXCITEMENT of a new adventure…..some went meerly because they needed a job and others had family south of our border and felt they were duty bound, amongst a multitude of other reasons. for the north, it was often mentioned they were fighting to free the slaves, but as noted in the previous posts, the AVERAGE southern soldier most often stated it was for states rights. please remember, POLITICIANS START WARS not farmers.
ladies and gentlemen most slave owners …over 80% were ABOVE the mason dixon line. as the north was far more affluent and could afford to own slaves. less so in the south. doesnt make it any more right.
but in previous posts there were some instances of name calling and the odd F bomb
there was really no need of this, as we all have a right to our own opinion do we not?
unfortunately, the st andrews cross shall be forever associated with hatred and racism, (the KKK has seen to that) and there isnt a thing we as a society can ever do to change that. its called history for a reason, and it is best left there. but we must learn from it or we are doomed to repeat it are we not?
as far as seeing a confederate plate on cars and trucks ….does it mean the individual driving is a racist and biggot, absolutely not…. misinformed, misguided sure! but instead of branding someone with these names without hearing what they have to say is really no better. allow the individual to open their mouth and remove all doubt. if they are, it will very quickly become apparent.
Wars are terrible things and it would be very nice to see the end of all wars. I myself, am a member of the military and would dearly love to see the end of needing my services . I hate war, but this is my chosen path ( and before someone says im two faced), I fight for PEACE, I fight for the right to be free…….oddly not unlike the the soldiers of that war
blindly judjing a person for having a confederate plate on their vehicle and not hearing them out doesnt solve a thing other than proving that you have an opinion. but would you have the nerve to confront the person and call them a racist to their face in public? chances are if the person is the least level headed you might be answering the nice officers questions and the person who owns the plate is free to go…. deffamation of character/ slander and verbal abuse is in this country are chargeable offences.
it is not illegal to own or display the confederate flag.
some people who display it, are indeed racist.
there are quite a few who are not.
most are ill informed

It's the author of this post who has no clue what the confederate flag represents. The confederate flag may have little relevance to Canadian contexts (those who want to champion their heritage would be better off waving the Red Ensign) however the confederate flag represents southern heritage, culture, faith and loyalty. There are many black confederates in the south now just like there were 150 years ago. Blacks served in coloured regiments under the confederacy and died alongside white men with honour and grace. It's worth noting that the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in the south but not the north, and that Lincoln's desire was to send all blacks back to Africa (he also said that blacks will never be US citizens or equal with whites). All the hate against the south and the confederate flag is simply the propaganda of the victor.

So glad I havent met any of those ignorant Canadians. None of my neighbors display that disgusting flag or are that ignorant. I have to wonder where these bigots live. Thankfully not around here.

Just the fact that anyone thinks this flag is racist makes me wonder who educates me and my fellow classmates. Does anyone know what Confederation is/was? Confederation is the act of being in an alliance! It was used to show pride in yourself and/or culture. Negro's used it in the time of Revolution to show connection between each other, to show they all had a common goal. If rebels from Lybia and Syria started using that flag would they be considered racist? Yes, because people jump to conclusions from past events. Making assumptions makes an ass out of you and everyone involved.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE! Who educates us? I feel sorry for my generation. We hold the future of this planet in our hands and we lose our grasp on common sense and logic.
